Wednesday 08/05/09 service plays chatter/comps/requests & gm strategy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. New York Mets St. Louis Cardinals
-130 at BETUS > 5h.

STL -131: The NYM are heading in the wrong direction in the last 7 games losing 5 of the 7. Yesterday they even lost with there ace Santana on the mound. The Cardinals lineup is healthy and putting up runs at a breakneck rate, yesterday scoring 12 runs. On the mound for STL is Lohse who is making his 5th start since coming back from the Disabled list. Each game he has been much better and last game he went 6 innings only allowing 1 run and 1 walk against the best team in the NL LA Dodgers. Today he will have no problem with the banged up NYM. The Mets don't have any consistent players that can produce on an everyday basis. On the other side the Cards have been great since getting Holiday and Derosa to help out with King Albert. The Mets have starter Niese who has had trouble since coming to start 4 games ago. He has given up 12 runs in 24 innings since coming up to the big leagues. Not good news for Mets fans as STL can really score runs. This one will not be close. SCORE STL 8 - NYM 3

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh Pirates
-105 at SPBOOK > 12h.
Arizona took Game One of their three-game series versus Pittsburgh 6 to 0 on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks have struggled on the highway this season posting a record of 47-59 SU for -14.1 Units averaging 4.2 runs per game with a batting average of only .230. Pittsburgh has been decent at home this season going 28-21 SU for +6.8 Units averaging 4.7 runs per game with a batting average of .283.

The Diamondbacks will send left-hander Doug Davis to the bump with his 5-10 record and ERA of 3.73 this season. Davis has also found the going tough on the road with a record of 2-4 and an ERA of 4.29. Over his last three outings he has only averaged 4.8 innings per start with 13 bases on balls which is not a particularly good sign when your bullpen has an ERA of 4.55 on the road this season along with a WHIP of 1.562.

His lone win over that span came against this Pirates team and their starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf. Davis pitched 6 innings giving up no earned runs with five hits three walks and eight strikeouts in a 7 to 0 win back on July 25th. In that game Ohlendorf didn’t pitch that poorly himself he went 6 innings giving up two earned runs on six hits two walks and two strikeouts in the loss.

Arizona is 5-12 overall when Davis takes the bump their last seventeen and 6-18 when he starts on the road. National League Central opponents have given the Diamondbacks and Davis trouble on the highway since 1997 going 1-11 SU for -9.9 Units.

Pittsburgh is 5-0 their last five when facing a left-handed starter and 6-0 when Ohlendorf starts at home. Ohlendorf is 7-2 (team 9-2) with an ERA of 3.34 at PNC Park this season and 2-1 his last three outings with an ERA of 3.12.

We expect the Pirates to bounce back from their Game One loss and for Ohlendorf to give us a quality start which should be enough to grab a Game Two victory and even this series at a game apiece. Its possible we could see the line move against us here and the Pirates become the favorites but we will still back the host even if we have to lay a short number. Take the Pirates as they get a win on Wednesday night at PNC Park.

Graded Selection: 2* Pittsburgh Pirates 5 Arizona Diamondbacks 3

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets (+120, 8.5)

Can we just go ahead and call 2009 a lost season for the Mets?

Barring a miraculous hot streak over its final 56 games, New York will be watching the postseason from home for a third straight season.

Injuries to the everyday lineup as well as the starting rotation and bullpen are the chief culprits for this season’s disappointing showing.

And while there remains hope that All-Stars Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran will return sometime this month, you have to question the three core players’ motivation to get back.

The atmosphere in the Cards' locker room is much more optimistic. The club is humming along in the NL Central, and its newest acquisitions (LF Matt Holiday and 2B Mark DeRosa) are loving life in St. Louis.

Pick: Cards

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-126, 9.5)

For those of you who watched the Rays’ 10-4 win over the Royals, you may have gotten a sneak peek at Tampa Bay’s new batting order.

Manager Joe Maddon gave leadoff man B.J. Upton and designated hitter Pat Burrell the day off Monday.

Maddon, instead, threw shortstop Jason Bartlett into the No. 1 hole and let Willy Aybar take his cuts at DH. Both players were key contributors in the victory.

Maddon was noncommittal on whether the moves would become permanent, but there’s reason to think they will. Aybar has three more homers than Burrell in 71 fewer at-bats, while Upton’s on-base percentage has dropped to a puke-invoking .318.

Expect the Rays to take this game while the Red Sox daydream about the following day’s contest versus the Yankees.

Pick: Rays

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Jorge De La Rosa (Colorado Rockies)

No member of the Rockies has benefited more from the midseason managerial change to Jim Tracy than De La Rosa.

The lefthander is 9-2 in 11 starts since Tracy took over in late May. He has won his last seven outings, working at least 5 2-3 innings in all of them while allowing no more than three earned runs in any of them.

"He's dealing with adversity a lot better," Tracy told the team's web site. "He's not overthrowing the ball, not rushing, he can get his pitches in the strike zone. When he does that with the stuff that he has, he's a very tough guy."

During his unbeaten streak, De La Rosa has a 2.70 ERA despite making five starts in hitter-happy Coors Field. One reason for De La Rosa's prolonged success has been his ability to limit the long ball. He has given up just three homers in his last 46 2-3 innings as a starter after allowing four in his previous 15 innings.

Rich Harden (Chicago Cubs)

The right-hander is in his best stretch of the season, even though his win-loss record may not reflect it.

In his last four starts, Harden is 2-0 with a pair of no-decisions in which the Cubs managed just three runs. He has gone four straight starts without allowing three runs for the first time this season.

There's more. In addition to a 1.50 ERA, Harden has allowed just 18 hits and walks while striking out 32 in 24 innings, including a season-high 11 in just five frames in his last outing.

Among pitchers with at least 90 innings, Harden is second in the NL in strikeout ratio, averaging 10.56 per nine innings.

Returning

Joe Martinez (San Francisco Giants)

The rookie righty will face Houston in his first major league start. He pitched twice in relief in April but took a line drive to the forehead off the bat of Milwaukee's Mike Cameron. He suffered a concussion, three hairline skull fractures, internal bleeding and a black eye.

Martinez underwent multiple CAT scans and was hospitalized for several days. More than a week after the incident, he still had no memory of it.

After a period of inactivity and eight rehab starts at three different levels of the minor leagues, Martinez is back in the majors with the Giants still searching for rotation consistency behind Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain.

Martinez was 0-1 with a 3.35 ERA in 37 2-3 minor league innings. He was 10-10 with a 2.49 ERA for Double-A Connecticut in 2008.

Kyle Davies (Kansas City Royals)

Davies has not pitched since June 19, after getting sent to the minor leagues because a prolonged stretch of poor outings. Davies is taking the rotation spot of Sidney Ponson, who was designated for assignment.

In his last seven starts before his demotion, Davies was 1-6 with a 6.30 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP (walks + hits per inning). He allowed eight homers in that stretch, and his only win came in a contest where he pitched the minimum five innings.

In eight starts at Triple-A Omaha, Davies was 4-2 with a 2.14 ERA. He was sent to the minors to work on command of his fastball.

"We still want to see it be better," Royals manager Trey Hillman told the team's web site. "It's just time to get him back up here and ride it out, get him back in the rotation and, hopefully, he performs well."

Slumping

Sergio Mitre (New York Yankees)

Take a good look at the journeyman right-hander filling the fifth spot in the rotation. He is getting worse with every outing, which is not a good sign for a team already monitoring Joba Chamberlain's innings.

In Mitre's first start, he worked his way through 5 2-3 innings to get a win. In his next start, he gave up four runs and nine hits in just five innings but received no decision. In his last outing, he was roughed up for five runs and seven hits in three innings and took the loss.

The innings are shortening, the runs are growing and the price on Mitre is shrinking. Those are telltale signs of a slumping pitcher.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever (-7, 151.5)

Indiana Fever guard Katie Douglas as been unstoppable since the All-Star break.

Douglas is averaging 30.0 points in three games since the break, climbing to eighth in the WNBA in scoring at 17.5 points per game. During her hot streak, she is shooting 26-of-53 from the field and 32-of-35 from the line.

Douglas has the Fever rolling again. Earlier this season, Indiana rattled off a franchise-record 11-game winning streak that included a 9-2 mark against the spread. The Fever have come out of the break with three wins in a row, going 2-1 against the spread.

Douglas is averaging 12 points against Chicago this season, helping Indiana to a pair of double-digit wins. The Fever have won five of the last six meetings.

Pick: Indiana

(919) BOSTON RED SOX
(920) TAMPA BAY RAYS
Take "(920) TAMPA BAY RAYS"

The Rays pulled out a must win victory Tuesday night in extras against the Red Sox, and they continue to give Boston fits at the Trop. David Price has been erratic, but the talented southpaw is on the improve, and I see the Rays having a good chance to get to Brad Penny tonight. The price isn't too high, so my choice is the Rays to complete the sweep against the Red Sox.

(929) TEXAS RANGERS
(930) OAKLAND ATHLETICS
Take "(929) TEXAS RANGERS"

Texas just won 6 of 9 games, a team in a pennant race chasing the Angels. Oakland is a last place team going nowhere. Rangers righty Vicente Padilla (8-5) has been throwing well, with just 2 walks, 10 Ks his last 3 starts (18 innings) and a 2-1 record. He faces a light hitting Oakland team with a struggling starter in Dallas Braden, who has a 6.52 ERA his last three starts, walking 11 in 19 innings. That's a miserable 11 walks and only 6 Ks. Play the Rangers.

Sad Marlins yesterday...leading 4 nothing and then giving up 6 runs in one inning to lose 6-4 against the Nats as a -170 favorite. Thanks FL for messing up a -1/1/2 play and messing up my TB/FL par.

Here's to getting it back today!

SARATOGA Race #1 at 1:00 PM Eastern

Top pick: #3 (TOUCH OF PERFECTION) - Drops and races around two-turns this afternoon after breaking "poorly" in her latest at Belmont. Filly had a strong record at Aqueduct this past winter going "long" and is the horse to beat.

2nd pick: #4 (Madison Avenue) - Drops, goes turf to dirt, and makes her third start back off a 2 1/2 month layoff. Sharp barn (Steve Klesaris) has her set-up for a big effort.

3rd pick: #5 (Saarlandisourland) - Very impressive maiden win last out in her first race ever in blinkers. Filly has a nice maintenance drill locally on July 28th and she's a contender as she faces winners for the first time.

4th pick: #8 (Driven By Seattle) - Much improved effort ( and her best ever) last out in her first race following a Bruce Brown claim. Draws a tough post but she's rated successfully in the past and could impact today from just off the lead.
